To be completely transparent, I was not planning to launch a website (with my name as its domain) until I finished my Clinical Psychology PhD program. I thought I was going to complete the program, internship, postdoc, and the EPPP, then start the website. Oops! Life does not always go according to our plans. I guess that is the beauty (or tragedy) of living. Currently, I am in the midst of my fourth year. My dissertation study is on consensual nonmonogamy or CNM relationships between middle-aged gay men. Essentially, both partners in the consensual nonmonogamous relationships agree or consent to being in a extra-dyadic sexual and/or romantic relationship, or CNM relationship. My proposal was approved by Fielding’s IRB last November. That was a exhilarating week! If only the rest of the CNM dissertation journey is just as smooth or successful. Well, the proposal process was not a completely joyride either, haha. In retrospect, everything is hard. The only part that is easy will be when I finally arrive at the other side! So, I took a short break to visit friends and family in Taiwan in December. I returned to the dissertation project in January, thinking it would be a smooth ride to recruit and interview up to twelve participants. Little did I know, the efforts to screen and pass applicants to participants would turn into a struggle-bus. I had asked for help through personal contacts, Facebook posting, Reddit posting, LISTSERV, Grindr profile, LGBTQ centers, my faculty network, even via Craigslist gigs. There was genuine interest from those I spoke to. However, I encountered many “catfish” applicants who did not meet the inclusion and eligibility criteria. So, here I am, coming up with another approach to recruit participants for my CNM study for gay male in middle-adulthood. Any insight and advice on how to screen and find 40-60 years old gay men who are in open relationships or consensual nonmonogamous relationships would be thoroughly appreciated!
